Rules of the Road
In light of recent highly publicised cases it's probably a good idea to explore the IRPCS this week. Many have heard the Power gives way to Sail and to a certain extent this is true but it's far from the complete picture.
Vessels in difficulty, vessels engaged in their work, ships with large draughts and craft in narrow channels all require other craft to give way to them under certain conditions.
There is an obligation on every skipper to at all times maintain a proper lookout and travel at a safe speed to avoid incidents with other craft and promote safety on the water. Speed limits may be set locally and MUST be respected.
It may interest you to hear that there is no such thing a Right Of Way on the water but in every situation where there may be a risk of collision one vessel is the 'Stand On' vessel and the other the 'Give Way' craft. The Rules of the Road give us guidance in choosing which vessel is which but every situation is unique and common sense must prevail - a rule of thumb is the bigger boat will win the fight but always give way if in any doubt - in plenty of time.
In restricted visibility - Fog, Haze, Smog, Snow, (but not darkness!) All vessels must Give Way, remembering to make the appropriate fog signal at least every 2 minutes while proceeding with the utmost caution at sea.

Sail Aweigh Cruises - a flavour of what you need to know about an Aquatrek Foreign Sailing Cruise...
Magical Croatia has over 1000 unspoilt offshore islands with tiny fishing ports and a chain of modern marinas with superb facilities for visiting sailors. Greece boasts the cradle of western civilisation as well as the unique cuisine, culture and of course the Mediterranean climate of warm dry summers to offer those hailing from cooler wetter climes.
If you're fed up with boring package holidays or if you prefer an active approach then a sailing holiday for a week with us might just be the answer. We'll help you to plan your holiday from start to finish and manage all the aspects of the sailing element of your trip, leaving you to just book your flights. Trips are 7-days, but you can extend if you wish.
All our cruises are led by a qualified Irish skipper who is also an instructor and is always available to answer any questions you might have. Formal training is freely offered on our cruises where you can sign off tasks in your logbook if you wish while non-sailors are encouraged to get involved but welcome to opt out if they prefer.
From beginners to yachtmasters we've had all abilities, ages, groups and families onboard in the past and all have been back to see more of the secluded gems which Aquatrek have discovered and are eager to share with our guests.
Our scheduled cruises are carefully planned to get the best value for money all-round - flights, charter rates and the best of the weather, but that's not all... we're still over 20% cheaper than our competitiors.
