Objective
The aim of this course is to provide a short practical introduction to boathandling and safety on powerboats in Irish waters. By the end of this course you will be able to safely and effectively crew a powerboat and take the helm while under supervision.
It is recommended that you consolidate this course with the National Powerboat Certificate course before taking charge of a powerboat.
Previous Knowledge / Experience
No prior experience or knowledge is required or assumed.
Duration
7 Hours, usually a full day.

Warm Clothes and waterproofs if you have them. We have a stock if you're stuck. We provide PFDs / Lifejackets.

We can also deliver this course in your own boat once some pre-conditions have been met.
Age:
It is illegal in Ireland for Under 16s to operate a powerboat capable of over 17 knots.
Under 12s may not operate a boat with an engine rated greater than 5 HP.

Material Covered / Syllabus
Preparation of boat for sea, Selection of Clothing & PPE, Basic Boathandling, Manoeuvres at Low & High Speed, Anchoring, Man Overboard Recovery/Action, Basics of Rule of the Road, National Legislation, Safety Onboard and summoning assistance.
Also covered is some basic ropework and knots, towing, weather forecasts, pilotage using buoyage, effects of tides and what training should I get next?
