Pilotage Details
Youghal Lighthouse is indicated on chartlet by green a square.
It has 2 white sectors at night, leading over both the East and West bars.
A South Cardinal mark (blue square) and East Cardinal (red square) are also lit.
In all weathers the Eastern Channel (red line) is good, keeping the lighthouse on about 330degM and keeping the ECM to Port. At night you'll find the R>W sector line of the light and simply follow this towards the lighthouse. Use Depth to choose your turning pt.
With a good height of tide the Western Channel (blue Line) is good, again on the W>R sector of the lighthouse and the SCM almost on transit but finally leaving it to S'bd.
Avoid this route in any weather.
Past the lighthouse, keep a heading of 010degM for the house on Ferrypoint (sandspit) until the inner harbour opens with the town on the western side.

| • | Entry at LW is possible but not recommended, HW +/-3 is best. |
| • | Watch for lobster/crab pot strings marked at each end by mooring buoys or black flags, usually found between 5 and 10m contours, Salmon driftnetting has ceased in Youghal - some guides refer to it but this info is outdated. |
| • | The Western Channel is to be avoided, Ebb tides make for short chops near the SCM, esp in any S > E wind. |
| • | Ebb tide with S'ly wind makes for a considerable overfall at the entrance, it can be skirted but with extreme caution. |
