Background
From time to time we run Powerboat Instructor courses at Aquatrek - based on demand from yourselves and our own requirements. A Powerboat Instructor (PBI) runs Introduction and National Powerboat Certificate courses.
Pre-requisites
- Min 17 years of age
- Recommendation form Club Officer or Centre Principal
- Pre-entry Assessment completed within 12 months (see below for details)
- Valid Emergency Care (or equivalent) First Aid certificate
- VHF Short Range Certificate (incl. DSC)
- Powerboat Instructor Pre-entry assessment
Duration
4 days (or 2½ days for ISA instructors converting from other disciplines)
Add 1 day if you need a Pre-entry assessment.

Pre Entry Assessment
We run preparation sessions and add on a day to the start of your instructor course for this assessment.
The assessment comprises both Theory and Practical skills elements.
Theory assessment may be written or by oral interview and covers Basic Engine fault-finding, Compass & Errors, Chart Symbols, Tides - heights, streams, Rule of 12ths and curves, Collision Regulations (IRPCS), Weather and Ropework.
The practical assessment requires you to confidently handle boat and crew, using all equipment onboard.
Skills tested include Preparation of Boat for use, Launch & Recovery, Starting & Stopping Engines, Slow Speed manoeuvres, Confined Space handling, Holding Off, Pick up a mooring, MOB Recovery, Coming Alongside, Hi-speed Manoeuvres and Anchoring.
